It’s the most western resort in Czech Republic. It is situated on a mountain forest-clad plateau next to the very boarder with Germany. And its original name is German too – Franzensbad. The city was founded in 1793 and it was renamed in honor of Franz I, an Austrian emperor, in 1807. So these are the Austria-German roots of the city. Alongside with crowned heads there were such people as Schiller, Beethoven and Goethe in this resort. The resort itself is famous not only for its 24 mineral springs. It became much more popular for its mud baths. The therapeutic muds are extracted from the peat fields which are found near the city. Carbon dioxide comes out of the fissures in the ground there as well. Some special booths are installed in the places where it comes out. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air so it accumulates in the bottom of these booths. It has a good influence on skin and improves blood circulation. It is also used to treat gynaecological disorders. Mud baths and mineral waters are prescribed for treating diseases of cardiovascular system, locomotor system, digestion, peripheral nervous system and to treat sterility. And the results in treating sterility are so striking that there is a popular belief that in order to become pregnant in Frantiskovy Lazne one can just touch the statue of small Frantisek in the downtown of the city near the Frantisek spring. The whole city is built in the style of classicism. Straight streets, lots of parks and alleys which are inhabited by fearless squirrels and hares. Parks and woodland park cover 250 hectares. The city is so beautiful that it was included into the association of Royal Spas of Europe. There are several antique temples in the city including the Orthodox temple of Saint Olga and the Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption. The city is surrounded by nature reserves. One of them is called America. It’s a big lake with unique species of birds which is the favorite resting place for the city dweller and the resort’s guests. In the north of the city there is a SOOS nature reserve. There are peat bogs there. Carbon dioxide comes out through many cracks and fissures with lots of hissing. It comes over to the surface of small lakes and it seems like the water is boiling. Here one can also see marfets – natural tiny mud mounds.
